What are the requirements?

It should be on dry-dock or at the Port, with facilities and fishing equipment.

Time frame

After inspection of the vessel and its facilities, the inspector will sign the vessel's fish inspector's register. During this period, the processor is expected to address the issues (if any) raised by the inspector within fifteen (15) days of receipt of the report to avoid non-conformity, and communicate in writing, to the inspector how they have addressed the issues that were raised. This process may take up to one (1) month depending on the level of compliance by the processor. The pre-inspection report will then be prepared and sent to the processor within five (5) days. The report contain a go-ahead to fish.

Additional information

In cases where the vessel is outside Kenya, the processor is required to facilitate the travel logistics for the inspectors to carry out the inspections on the vessel and the vessel's processing mechanisms. The vessel's management must seek fishing authorization from the Director General, Kenya Fisheries Service, and obtain a certificate of Kenya registry, and a certificate of sea worthiness from the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), which will allow them to navigate Kenyan waters.
